Remember this post about the new efforts to recruit women?
“In the latest campaign, a print ad shows a female Marine striking a martial arts pose in front of a crowd of men who are looking up to her as their leader. The tag line: “There are no female Marines. Only Marines.”
And that woman they quoted who said, “She’s supposed to look like she’s being empowered, but she’s in a typical self-defense stance. After knowing the statistics and talking to women who have experienced sexual trauma or violence in the military, it’s hard to think of it as empowerment.”
Well, thanks to a certain Mr. Smith who sent me this photo, now we can all see it! And this is definitely NOT what I would consider a self-defense pose:

She’s doing the EYE GOUGE move! Since when is that a “typical self-defense stance”?
Edit: Okay now that I think about it, you’re supposed to curve your fingers for the eye gouge. Whatever. She’s still doing or about to do something that would hurt!
I am a female Marine currently in the Individual Ready Reserve. I like to sleep, travel, read, eat, explore, and take photographs. I read lots of news and I like reading about life in other countries. I am easily amused and my dream job is to be snoozing in a warm patch of sunlight, hopefully with a piece of tasty cheese nearby for when I wake up hungry.

You’re welcome.
Bill Smith
It looks to me that she is delivering the much safer “flick to the eyes” rather than the slightly bent fingers which would gouge through shooting glasses.
No doubt in my mind that this is an attack movement, and she certainly looks like she knows what she is doing.
To me that looks like a modified “Cheon-Ji hyeong” which is one of the 19 Hyegong in Tae Kwon Do

That’s an eye gouge… I know the Gunny in that photo, and let me tell you… she is TERRIFYING. In a good way, but TERRIFYING none the less. I can assure you that she can soundly kick any man’s ass.
That IS the eye gouge.

I don’t care what it is, I do NOT want to be on the receiving end of it.
She sure would have my attention and respect.
That’s Pink Power Ranger!!!! Do you think that is real? Try watching UFC Unleashed! That is real!!! Big Ugly
she was my platoon sergeant at OCS…
I agree with everything sara says
Ok….I have been knowing this GySgt for many years and let me tell you, she is no punk! Just because you are a woman does not mean you can’t attack and damn Kill!
Some of the negativity that I see in this Blog is just the typical type of BS that women get anytime they are in a position of authority or doing something that “a man” is suppose to do”.
That’s GySgt Smith Levy. She was the SI for 7th Plt for OCS 198 last summer at Marine Corps OCS. I was in the other female plt. She is a badass!
Does anyone see anything wrong with this poster?
1. Marines don't train in MCMAP with covers on.
2. Marines don't wear covers without blouses.
3. Only MAITs are authorized to wear the black MAIT shirts in boots and utes. That GySgt is a brown belt instructor.
This is awesome and inspiring. Where can i get one of these posters? i want to frame it and put it on my wall. :)
