Somewhere in one of the bajillion emails and comments I’ve received over the last week somebody asked, “I was thinking about doing MSG duty, is it really that bad??”
I won’t say either yes or no because it’s both. Living in the places I’ve lived is a bajillion times better than living in Albany Georgia or Camp Lejeune or from what I hear, Barstow and 29 Palms. But the rules and regulations…gah. Let’s not get into that again…
But I did realize something today. Before I came on the program everyone said there’s hardly any former MSGs in the Fleet because they all get out for the higher-paying jobs MSG training qualifies you for. Some do, sure. One, that I know of.
A few go back to the Fleet but most of the MSGs I’ve known who finished their tour get out because they are sick of the Marine Corps, not because of a juicy job offer. As for the ones who are still out here…they don’t gloat over future job offers either, they just count the days until they are a civilian again.
I am a female Marine currently in the Individual Ready Reserve. I like to sleep, travel, read, eat, explore, and take photographs. I read lots of news and I like reading about life in other countries. I am easily amused and my dream job is to be snoozing in a warm patch of sunlight, hopefully with a piece of tasty cheese nearby for when I wake up hungry.

what is a MSG?
Every job has it’s ups and downs. In civilian life it’s lack of security-at any moment your financial world-and rest of your life is in jeopardy. In military life-you might be guaranteed a job-but one you don’t like-and that puts your mental life in jeopardy lol
MSG – Marine Security Guard
I HAVE A FRIEND AND SHE IS THINKING OF JOINING WORD YOU SENT SOME WORDS OF ADVICE TO THROUGH THIS E-MAIL ADDRESS LINK10378@HOTMAIL.COM
yo think that women should be allowed to be in infantry because that just takes you from crazy to my level psycho
It’s good experience to be a cop or some kind of security guard. What are those people that guard the National Monuments in D.C. called? Looks easy and probably make decent money but you have to live near D.C.!
Um… I was on MSG (3-88, yeah, a long time ago) and I’m still on active duty. MSG was a good experience, but had parts that sucked too. I still rate it at 60/40. 40% of it sucked, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. I’m guessing you won’t want to either.
